Excellent. I'm kind of scared of those complicated effects units because I really don't like to tinker- I just like to plug in and play. Me too that’s one reason I never use pedals. Other reason is I think they muddy up the sound of guitars. I know at my age I should be using compact lightweight stuff, but bugger it I'm starting to downsize my stuff for gigs now- we'll see how satisfied I am in a few months.

I started downsizing a few years ago. At the end of the night, I’m totally “bagged” and carrying my stuff down to the basement has to wait till the next day. It was great when my son lived at home as he would do it for me. But now, I just leave the PA speakers and all my stands in the garage. The only real heavy item that goes downstairs is my amp and at 32 lbs, the Katana is almost 20 lbs lighter than my Deluxe Reverb.

I found a YouTube video tonight where a guy has created a Deluxe Reverb patch for the Katana and in the video, he shows screenshots of the EQ parameters and all the other tweaks so I’ll have to try setting it up myself but I have to say that I almost had the EQ set up perfectly. I had just scooped the mids a little more than he did. I’ll probably get around to it tomorrow or on the weekend.

So this morning, I watched the YouTube video and copied the guys settings. I used my A/B splitter box and compared the sounds and found the Katana sounded deeper than the Deluxe Reverb but I was getting close. I figured the reason for this was the speaker differences between my Deluxe Reverb and his and between my 100watt Katana and his 50 watt Katana. My DR has a C-Rex in it and his has a Jensen alnico. Boss uses two different speakers in the 50 and 100 watt Katanas.
All that being said, I was in the general ballpark soundwise so I tweaked the global EQ through my computer all while flipping back and forth with my splitter box and I’m about 95% there. The only thing that I can’t reproduce is the “sponginess” or “sag” that the Deluxe Reverb has. Otherwise, I think I’ll be happy with what I’ve done as the difference won’t be noticeable in a band setting

That's one thing I have to wonder how they could simulat then again, nowadays it seems like so much is possible that we never would have dreamed of when we were teens...

That's one thing I have to wonder how they could simulat then again, nowadays it seems like so much is possible that we never would have dreamed of when we were teens... Correct. In the video, the guy is using the newer Katana MkII which has a few upgrades from my MkI, notably, concentric pots for the effects, drive and modulation allowing the use of 4 simultaneous effects plus reverb instead of 2 plus reverb on mine. My amp uses one pot to perform two functions. The first half of the sweep is one effect and the second half is a different type of effect. He used some compression to imitate sag on his MkII. However on my amp, the compressor falls under the modulation pot which is shared with the booster pot. So if I want to use some type of overdrive or distortion, I can’t use the compressor since it fall under the modulation heading and they share the same pot. The newer version with concentric pots allows the use of both. If I can find a way to relocate the compressor to the another pot, I’ll do it. However, I can always put my compressor pedal through the effects loop too!

Most important thing is you could use it in a band setting if you wanted to and reduce weight of what you are living around. Sounding like my other amps is one thing my henricksen amp won't do for me. Although the weight and size are reduced, it won't sound remotely like my Dr, Z. However I gain a second channel with an XLR input which actually has enormous value for me for announcements

The amp sounds good as is but now that I’ve learned how to tweak it, the possibilities are endless! The 32lb Katana replaces a 50lb Deluxe Reverb and 15lb pedal board

Not perfect but a decent gigging amp. Well nothing's truly perfect. My perfect gigging amps sound- wise are all very heavy and/or large

I know at my age I should be using compact lightweight stuff, but bugger it Even though I own a modeling amp I don’t use the effects in it, just the amp models. I don’t like multi effects units as I only use no more then 2 or 3 effects at a time and the same ones as well. The multi effects units I have used in the past proved to be a big pain in the ass for me.

I have an old Digitech multineffects unit. I use it at rehearsals nowadays so that I don’t have to bring an amp. I just plug it into the PA and I’m ready to go. Do I use it on gigs? No, it sounds too “over processed”. I used to use my Deluxe Reverb and some pedals until I got the Katana. The Kat has effects built into it that are based on Boss’s own pedals. It doesn’t change the basic sound of the amp...in other words, it doesn’t sound processed at all.
