I wasn't sure if I should answer as mine wasn't a genuine LP, but I knew exactly what you meant. The body on my LP copy was in fact extremely heavy- that is what made the guitar so awkward. As I've said--my first electric was a LP copy--and I guess I just got used to string with the body heavier that way. If my first had been my Iceman--it might be different. But when standing there is something cool about the body heavy thing Mine was never comfortable even as a teenager. I wish I could weigh that thing

My LP copy is lighter than my Gibson (Norlin era though)

Before I bought my Tele, a friend told me that her boyfriend was selling his guitar and said that I could try it out. It just so happened that it was a Norlin era Goldtop LP with humbuckers and I had a gig that weekend so I invited him to come and bring the guitar. At the time I had an SG copy that I was using so I brought it along too. Anyway, I do recall the LP being very heavy compared to my SG copy but something that scared me was while I was playing it, his strap broke. Now it was an old strap but the weight of the body just sheared through the thin piece of leather. I was just standing there playing and singing and suddenly the strap broke and I found myself clinging onto the neck tightly. Luckily I had my guitar there and I finished the set with my own strap and then played the next set with my own guitar as I was afraid that it was gonna break my strap too. However, I have to note that back then, the weight of a guitar didn’t matter to me as I was a strong 18 year old kid. A few months later, I went to a music store and I was interested in a Gibson L6S which is the same guitar Carlos Santana was playing at the time. So I tried it out for a little while and then a blonde Telecaster caught my eye. I plugged it in and it was game over for any Gibson with humbuckers. I loved the feel but most of all, it had a sparkle that the Gibson and my SG copy lacked. I liked the clarity and I never really looked back. Funny when I was a teenager I had the strap for my LP copy snap too. Although that strap was real junk. One of those crappy 70's straps that was woven on one side and vinyl on the other. Our was it leather? Someone gave it to me and it was really old. That’s exactly the type of strap that broke and the type of straps we all used back then before we started splurging on good Levys straps.

The L6S I tried was heavier than any Les Paul I've ever played-played some heavy Teles too. Never had the strap issue with a Les Paul--but depending on the strap, I can see that being an issue. The L6S had a maple body if I recall correctly. I once built a maple bodied Tele and geez that thing weighed a ton but it resonated like a piano

Not really. At my age, a guitar weighing a few ounces would be heavy after a 2-3 hour gig. While playing, the adrenaline gets me through the sets.
I haven't really weighed them all, but I think the LP Standard with the 2Tek bridge is the heaviest, probably near or over 10lbs.
It isn’t an issue for me to play a 10 pound guitar But maybe one day However I was referring to the body vs the neck Basically the opposite of neck dive I know some who don’t like that part (Body dive) I don’t have an issue that way (& I guess I could have been clearer) No I have never suffered from body dive on any guitar. I tend to have my guitar a bit low down, so perhaps my hips stop them diving
I have had neck dive with the couple of SGs I owned

Yeah I think those straps were really made for a 3 pound acoustic, not for a 10 pound Les Paul. And the fact that it was probably over 10 years old probably didn't help too. Nowadays I also buy much better straps!

Hmm, if I didn't know this place better I'd suspect there's a strap thread starting soon--if it already hasn't. (This isi the first thread I've checked since logging in)
I've never had the same issues with straps--although the strap holes can wear out over time.

Use to be a Jackson fan, but then one day I picked up a Les Paul. From that point on I got strung out on Les Pauls. I started just with Epiphones and knock offs, but that wasn't doing and the itch was strong.
I traveled a lot for work I stopped at a GC (I think the Farmers Branch,TX store) played a Studio worn faded or whatever they were being called then. Shouldn't have done that as it now I can't quit Gibson Les Pauls. I don't think there is anything wrong with Les Pauls
I agree with the prices are getting up there. My last Gibson Les Paul was purchased in 2017 and that was my Traditional Pro. I paid less for it new than what the current "Studios" are going for.
I also prefer Studios & BFG's (prefer no binding) over Standards, but have love for Traditionals.

I like the P90/Humbucker combo in the BFG, but not a fan of the tops--they feel weird when I play--but if I came across one for a good price I could get used to it.

The custom shop lp’s, especially the reissues are horribly expensive and your off the rack standards are pricey as well. For the dollar the studio is by far the biggest bang for the buck. I have a newer studio with the pull pots that add another dimension to the big fat Gibson tone. Overall there is not much outside of being super nit picky that I don’t like about the lp’s, I really should play mine more but that’s mostly a comfort thing

I should play mine more often--because I should be playing guitar more often.

Does owning an lp so expensive your afraid to take it out of the house make the list? I’ve never played out with my 68 to reissue, I should, or what’s the point.

Fair point--and while it would be cool to play a 58-60 Burst--in a way it could be a bit crazy. And owning one? I couldn't afford to properly insure one.

2 LPs in my little collection - a 2002 Std in Desertburst and an 82' Tokai Custom in Wine Red.
There is absolutely nothing about either that I'd change.

Of my lp’s, 2006 68 reissue custom triburst, 2019 studio wine red, lp special with p-90’s black, 2013 70’s tribute gold (satin), I only made a change to one and that was putting a bigsby on the 70’s tribute. My favorite is the studio.

I have this 2018 that I like. It spits venom and I use it a lot for pick up jams where I'm screamin in a mic about the injustice of the world and how some roads lead to paradise, some roads lead to pain, some roads lead to freedom, but they all look the same .. lol

Also have this 2015 which has the 1&3/4 nut width. Might sell this one just to make some room.

I like Lp's, but not the weight (chronic tendonitis, left shoulder). Had an Epi hollow for a bit that I liked, but a buddy liked it better and he had something that I liked.
I waited too long to respond to an ad for this. I'm hoping that it pop's up for sale again someday. ExNihilo

I like Juniors, but I think I'd do better with a Special if I went that route-I'd miss the neck pickup Although younger me would have been okay with only a bridge pickup.

Older me likes the single kick-ass P90 bridge pickup on the Jr. and also the disturbing the peace bridge pickup on the Broadcaster .. lol

Weight relieved and chambered lp’s are considerably lighter but still to heavy for a lot of folks. The juniors/specials are really light and awesome sounding guitars.

I have 4 Reissues, worth between £5-6k in the U.K. I play them all out. I am always careful with my guitars when gigging. Usually take 3 guitars, worth about £10-15k, depending on which I take. They are never left unattended & haven’t lost one yet. Guitars, IMO, are meant to be played. If I was lucky enough to own a burst, I would l still try and gig it. Insurance would be expensive though

Disclaimer: I love Les Pauls. Full stop.
The first time I saw a pic of Jimmy leaning back with dragon pants and that 'burst hanging around his knees, I was done. That to me was the look of rock music in the early 70s and I wanted to play guitar immediately. And not just any guitar, a Les Paul.

I love my 1975 Les Paul Deluxe. way back in 1968 or so, my cousin showed me how to play "Sunshine of Your Love" on his '50s model Les Paul.(can't remember what year the guitar was) anyway, my quest to own a Les Paul one day was started. finally in 1985, I found one. it was a 1975 Les Paul Deluxe. I basically stole the thing for $350. it might be heavy to some people, but it's mine ! here is a group that my cousin was in back in the late 60s/early 70s. the Allman Brothers opened for them in New Orleans once. my cousin Les is playing the lead guitar. he's playing a Les Paul of course.
