On This Day - 9th March 1566
David Rizzio, Italian courtier and private secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots, was murdered in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh. Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, is said to have been jealous of their friendship, because of rumours that he had made Mary pregnant, and he joined in a conspiracy of Protestant nobles to murder him.
The murder led to the downfall of Darnley who was himself murdered, apparently by strangulation, less than a year later. Note - The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh (see ©BB picture) is the Queen's official residence in Scotland.

On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City.
Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945. After seeing her young daughter ignore her baby dolls to play make-believe with paper dolls of adult women, Handler realized there was an important niche in the market for a toy that allowed little girls to imagine the future.

1876: The telephone is officially born in a laboratory on Exeter Place in Boston, as Alexander Graham Bell hollers into his variable resistance transmitter, which sits in a bowl of water and sulphuric acid, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." Bell's assistant, Thomas A. Watson, hears him; "the effect was loud but indistinct and muffled." In a letter to his father today, Bell scribbles triumphantly, "Articulate speech was transmitted intelligibly this afternoon." A year-and-a-half later, Bell offers to sell the commercial rights to the telephone for $100,000 to Western Union, which rejects the offer on the grounds that the telephone is a passing fad.

Nationality To meet RAF nationality requirements, you need to be one of the following:
British citizen British national British/Dual national Commonwealth citizen Irish Republic national

On March 12, 1933, eight days after his inauguration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gives his first national radio address—or “fireside chat”—broadcast directly from the White House.
Roosevelt began that first address simply: “I want to talk for a few minutes with the people of the United States about banking.” He went on to explain his recent decision to close the nation’s banks in order to stop a surge in mass withdrawals by panicked investors worried about possible bank failures. The banks would be reopening the next day, Roosevelt said, and he thanked the public for their “fortitude and good temper” during the “banking holiday.”

Sad day on 13th March 1996 - Scotland Dunblane Massacre In Dunblane, Scotland Thomas Hamilton bursts into the gymnasium of the Dunblane Primary School with four guns and opens fire on a kindergarten class killing Sixteen children and their teacher . Hamilton was known to have a history of drug use. He also had resigned from his position as a Boy Scout leader in the 1980s, due to improper behavior. As a result stricter gun laws were passed in Great Britain. The teacher and 16 of these kids were killed.
How can someone do that? At least the UK really tightened up laws banning most handguns
