In they video you see more clearly what I mean about how I hold a pick. And most people I've seen play guitar do as well. I am nto referring to his remarks about the hand placement on the bridge--although I do that for some things. It depends what I am playing. I am referring to the way he holds the pick. An one Eddie Van Halen holds the pick with his middle finger pfft..

I remember reading that in an interview a number of years back, but that was due to his tapping--so he made an adjustment. But the question remains--how did he position that middle finger?

Marty Friedman is another one who holds his pick in the none conventional way. I personally think I developed some bad guitar habits trying to learn it the "correct" way. Instead of what's comfortable to me or even what works best for me.

But when you hold the pick is your index finger parallel or perpendicular or something else? I do rotate the pick sometimes so a different part of the pick strikes the strings, but I use the same grip I think maybe the second last photo then. I have never tried it that way and shaping my hand like that right now makes me feel like I wouldn't have a good grip on the pick. I am, however gonna try this tonight and see how it works. Lord knows I could use something to up my game.

I was wondering if the experienced players here could give me a little insight...
I hold a pic like the dude in the video suggests. But i`ve never had a teacher to talk to about little things, like...
I find myself changing how much pic i have exposed past the end of my thumb and index finger when I change from strumming to picking a melody during a song. I think I`ve found more control and speed in this at times, and tone changes slightly too, at least to me on an acoustic the sound seems more compressed. But, my ability to let the pic move between my thumb and finger, to get more or less pic exposed when desired, is where get clumsy...still working on it...
So do you guys move the pic around to change the amount exposed to strike the string, or is this a mistake in my technique?

I do change my grip depending what I am playing--it came naturally over time. Strumming chords I hold the pick more loosely and use more of it--so I am holding less of it. When I play single notes I cover more of the pick, and as I pick up speed I slightly angel the pick as well. I also rotate the pick for some things--certain feels & styles I will pick with one of the back crooners of the pick or with the long side. I don't think of it consciously--just stuff I do after years of playing.

I play a lot of rock so I tend to keep the pick pulled in, I do a lot of pinch harmonics during lead solos and a lot of chord picking, some strumming. When I do strum I have way more pick out there.
