Yeah, not a gigging guitar for me, but something different. I know I would never buy a guitar like this

I mean lots of guys here have modeling amps so in that sense a modeling guitar makes total sense. I am kind of old fashioned with my gear, no effects and nothing fancy. I suppose if you were in a band where you played Stairway to Heaven (just an example,) where you needed to switch guitars on the fly something like this would totally make sense so you don't have to bring multiple guitars. The modeling guitar isn't perfect but it probably gets you close enough to what you need

Like your guitar the models aren’t perfect but good enough. For me, there are to many choices, to many bells and whistles with modeling stuff, if that makes any sense.

Thats exactly my problem. I am not one to fiddle with stuff. Get the tone and volume right on the amp and trim from the guitar if you need to during performance. And of course all those choices are really exciting to others, which is great for them. To me it is just functionality that I won't ever use. I don't even know how to use the pedal that came with mt Dr. Z amp after 4 or 5 years. No idea what it does...

I continue to try this guitar pretty much during daily practice with my son. I'm finding it to be pretty playable with my rather unprofessional setup. Probably 80%+ of the settings are at least somewhat usable.
One interesting thing is that because this is an active instrument, the output is generally fairly loud so I have to keep the guitar volume way down. Interestingly too some pickup sounds are significantly louder than others. You have to be a little careful there. If you were playing a gig and switching pickup settings mid-song, you may be far too loud or too soft.

I've never tried a Variax, but a while ago, the drummer from my previous band and I did a session one day with another friend who had some original material he wanted to hear in a band setting. he had a Godin guitar which he'd set up with some kind of Roland active circuitry that did modeling of various instruments. I didn't expect to have any enthusiasm for it, but there were a couple of setting....one that sounded like saxophone and another that sounded like a Hammond organ that were really quite authentic sounding. I'd enjoy having those sounds available, but I'd find it quite limiting to be tied to a certain guitar to get the effects. The Roland-ready Strat would probably be the closest thing to what I'd be satisfied with.

They had a “hex” pickup that worked with the Roland synth. I heard a guy trying one in a music store once and was impressed. I’m still interested in getting one.

It might not ever get as good as some people want it to--but the steps it's going through are cool, and as things get better we can get some different options.

I marveled at that thing when I was a teenager- it seemed like something that would cost a million dollars

I have a Roland ready strat, my wife found it on eBay or some place like that for next to nothing, it looked like it was barely used and came with everything. It does exactly what your previous drummer was describing, models other instruments. Mine is a dark blue MIM strat, came with a controller. After setting up the guitar which played pretty good I went thru everything it had. I just never had any use for it and I wasn’t a big fan of the models. Not even sure if it classifies as a modeler, I think it’s referred to as a synth. Stilll hanging on to it, ya never know.

BTW in case anyone is interested i got in touch with my friend who gave me the line 6 and I asked him why the heck the action was so high.
Basically he said that he bought the guitar on clearance for like $300 more than 10 years ago. He never set it up or adjusted anything. Played it a few times and basically realized that he didn't really care about any of the voices so it has sat unplayed ever since.
Ironically since I leave it out on the stand I find myself playing it quite often. My favourite? No. But I think I won't chuck it either.

I’m a gear pac-rat, I have a hard time letting go of things even if I haven’t used them for years. Figure once I retire I won’t be able to afford a lot of things so why not, at least that’s how I justify it🤔

I'm trying to be better about clearing stuff out because when I retire I'm pretty sure we will downsize the house.
