Brent, I studied Mechanical Engineering and spent most of my working life working for TRW and Gentherm in automotive switch and electronic module design. Great gig while it lasted!

TRW! I haven't heard anything about that company in years- weren't they acquired by Northrop?

I don't have any love for Gretsch, but neither do I have any hate for them. Just answering the question.
Some fantastic music has been played on various Gretsch guitars over the years--and I would't complain if someone gifted me with one. But overall most Gretsch guitars don't really get along with me.
But if they do it for you--cool. Enjoy!

Gretsch guitars have always had a mystique for me. For years I equated them with expensive and unattainable. One of the nicest I've ever seen was my landlord's father's guitar...a very old red Country Gentleman. It played nicely although I was shocked at how low the pickup output was. I came really close to buying an Electromatic rescue guitar a few months ago...Just a body and neck that a friend had bought just to scavenge parts for something he wanted to build. Missed it by a day. Now, in retrospect, I can recognize that it's just a cheap decent guitar but nothing special. It reminds me of a friend who bought a Cadillac years ago and confided in me later that "It was just a car....When you drive it, it feels just like a Chevy." About the only one I still lust for is a White Falcon.

About the only one I still lust for is a White Falcon. my first guitar was/is a 1959 Gretsch Anniversary Model. so, there is no mystic for me. I never knew any better. I hadn't seen very many Gretsch guitars back in 1966 when I started playing. sure, I saw Chet Atkins playing one. I had no idea just how many models Gretsch had until I joined the www.gretschpages.com forum in 2007. if you'll remember, back in the 60s, you usually owned one guitar because that's all you could afford. matter of fact, I didn't buy my first acoustic until I was stationed in Germany in the early 70s - a Framus.
the Gretsch 6XXX series are the professional guitars. the Gretsch 5XXX series(Electromatics) are the less expensive guitars. and now Gretsch has come out with a Player series. all in all, they are all very well made guitars.

I wonder how many guys bought Gretsch because of Chet Atkins- and who could blame them. Talk about a "total musician"- the guy could play anything

Yes, after they appeared on Ed Sullivan guitar sales in general increased, and those that asked bought or checked it out bought Gretsch and Rickenbacker--as well as anything that looked like them. I'm sure Hofner saw some benefit as well.

And anything that looked like a Hofner, no doubt.
Later on Epiphone got a boost from the Beatles using them.

Sometimes low budget gear is the right choice.

Sometimes low budget gear is the right choice. Totally agree, although nowadays most of my low budget gear has been jettisoned to make space

David Lindley made a career out of it--and Jack White did for part of his career.

Jimmy Page uses a Danelectro--a cheaper guitar--for slide. Actually that isn't all that uncommon for other slide players.
