Originally these were homemade--and sometimes they still are. there are also companies that make them--some are realistically priced & reflect the intent & history of these instruments. Some are over priced. But to start out here's a site that has bunch of info & resources on cigar box guitars I have no affiliation with them. Cigar Box Guitar

I thought of this when posting some picks as one was branded with a brand of cigar box guitars--I like, but haven't bought one yet. I do have something called a Blues Box Guitar--probably similar to why candy cigarettes are now called candy sticks It is a cardboard body--but wood neck (& it's a through neck--as many cigar box guitars are. In a way it's kind of a toy guitar--but playable & fun. And in some ways it has fuelled my desire to get a better one. (It has a cheap piezo pickup in it.) Still fun to play.

I have something else that sort of fits into this category--at least the homemade side of things dB & Spell have seen this before--and it's been too long since I've posted it I present to you--the Baux II:

The Baux is actually intended to be a bass--and my first experience with fretless bass. It was made by a friend of mine before I met him, and before he had a real guitar. The top & back are 1 inch plywood and the sides are panelling that is nailed on. The neck is a bolt on-a 2 by 4 that is sort of shaved down. Originally it had 4 strings held on by screws you would turn to tune them. By the time I first saw it it had 3 strings (He never replaced the one that broke. Over time it became a two string & when I took over guardianship of it it had one string left. I removed the screw, drilled a small hole & added a tuning machine and a new string. I had thought about making it a two string, but it has remained a 1 string.
For such odd construction it actually sounds okay--better than okay actually.
I took over guardianship when he was getting married He was going to throw it out as he had to get serious, being married & all. As I was single at the time I asked him if I could have it. It didn't' feel right to throw it away. So now it's at my home.
I don't play it much--but it's there at home, any time I want to.

Last year at Barnes and Noble they had the BBGs on clearance at like 80% off. I wanted to get one but for some reason I was in a hurry and didn't. When I went back they were all gone...

My brother saw one on sale at a local bookstore & bought it for me for Christmas a few years back It comes with a book & glass slide I use my brass slide though If I see one again for a good price I might buy it & paint the neck & put odd wall part or stickers on the body (What you see on the body is a sticker) Just to be different

I'd buy one if I saw the kits cheap again, although I probably wouldn't play it super often

For an example of what can be done on a cigar box guitar-here's Cigar Box user & maker (As well as many "Found Item" guitars, and Diddley bows, Glenn Kaiser on one of his creations.
It's a raw sound, but I like it.

Shane Speal (from Poor Man's Guitars site) has made a career of playing these instruments--cigar box guitars & others. On one had they are simple to play, but like so many things they are tricky to master. They can be trickier to play then they seem, but a lot of fun to play.

I did get the idea to start this thread by posting a pick with WF on it (Which stands for Winston Fidel-who make cigar box guitars)--well I'm finally mentioning them--here's a video of someone playing one of their guitars--and mentioning it in the between songs patter. Also check out the bass.

Versatility of the Cigar Box Guitar
Part of the reason I'd like a better one than my BluesBox
I've tuned mine to open G (no third)
